In the book, Niacin: The Real Story, authors Hoffer, Saul & Foster say niacinamide works as well as niacin, except no blood lipid benefits. Does anyone know of other benefits of niacin over niacinamide?

When I decided I to try high doses during a stressful time, I started with niacinamide (3000 mg/day in 3 doses) to avoid flushing. I found it very calming. The authors say niacinamide causes nausea if the dose is too high, but I haven't experienced that. Anyone know how to figure out how much you really need with high dose niacin or niacinamide?

Now I have to decide if I should switch to niacin. If I do, gradually seems to be the way to minimize flushing. Should I end up with half niacin, half niacinamide or all niacin?

Thanks!
Elaine

Niacin may be better in terms of enhancing longevity than niacinamide.

There is also the benefit of histamine release for anorgasmia or to promote relaxation.

My first niacin flush was scary.   However, I've grown to enjoy the flushing--it's kind of exhilarating.  Start at 500 mg per day, then 1000 mg per day, then 1500 mg per day.  Going higher than that may cause drowsiness.

Yes, sleepiness is another benefit if it is taken before bed.

Did know one person who found niacin aggravated his rosacea.  Another possible unwanted effect is a reversible elevation of liver enzymes.
