Vitamin D vs. Sun Exposure

I read with interest the latest Life Extension Magazine on vitamin D and optimum levels. I have been taking 2000iu/ day but I plan to up that to 4000iu. I did blood testing last year for D. My question is should I change my D level in the summer months when I get a great deal of sun exposure? Would it be unsafe for a 63 year old male, 165lbs to take the 4000iu and get the sun exposure? I suspect there is no way to quantify sun exposure to vitamin D levels as there are so many factors such as skin pigment, what parts or percentage of the body are exposed etc. I am Caucasian but rather dark complected.

The only way to ascertain whether your vitamin supplement dose is correct is by blood testing.  If your blood test results are within the optimal range, you may only need to supplement with a low amount or none if your body is forming an adequate amount of vitamin D subsequent to sun exposure.  Someone with darker skin may form less vitamin D in response to sun exposure than a lighter skinned person.  Life Extension's Blood Test Super Sale is on now, so it would be a good time to order a vitamin D test.  See
