I'm posting my results from my primary, natural therapy to relieve my cold (maybe flu) symptoms.  I've been trying to avoid having to take antibiotic drugs, so here is what I've been doing thus far.  I share this here to help others as it is cold and flu season. I'll try to list my regimen in chronological order as best as I can remember it.

December 15:

Family member arrives with an infection that they caught on the plane flight.

December 17:

First day that I remember catching the infection.  Started with sneezing, followed by an infrequent, dry cough.  No head ache or muscle pains. Still feeling fairly well.  Not taking anything at this point, hoping the symptoms would wane.

December 20:

Frequent sneezing. Dry cough has now turned into wet cough indicating a bit of mucus build up. I'm a bit worried it might turn into a chest infection. Considering staring on a natural therapy, but will wait it out and see if symptoms progress.

December 22:

Chronic sneezing, persistent runny nose, stuffy sinuses. Headache. Slight fever. Persistent, wet cough. Mucus has now changed to a dark green color indicating possible infection. Roughness in the chest, indication that infection has migrated to respiratory tract. Still feeling well enough to get around.  Very concerned, but not ready to resort to antibiotic drugs, so I started on my natural therapy as described below:

December 23 (1 day after starting natural therapy):

Cough has turned chronic. Chronic runny nose. Stuffy head.  Coughing up thick, dark colored mucus. Infection has advanced and I believe has migrated to the upper respiratory tract. I believe this may be due to what is called the Herxheimer Reaction -- When large quantities of toxins are released into the body as bacteria die during antibiotic treatment.  So, I'm assuming this is why I feel worse after day one of treatment.  I have no other body aches.  I've decided to call my doctor on Monday, December 27 for an antibiotic prescription if symptoms and infection hasn't subsided.

December 24 (2 days after starting natural therapy):

Woke up today and felt much better. I believe the natural therapy is helping with the infection because mucus is not as dark and appears to be decreasing.  I will see what tomorrow brings.  I decided to take Advil Liquid Gel Caps to help reduce inflammation and any possible fever.

December 25 - (3 days after starting natural therapy)

Woke up feeling much better. Chest congestion and sinus congestion has decreased to the point of almost nothing. Mucus output has decreased even more significantly and has regressed from dark to clear; which is a good sign that infection is clearing up.  I do believe the herbal products are killing the infection.  Cough is now infrequent No aches, no pains. just a stuffy nose.  Symptoms seem to be subsiding quickly.  A good sign.

I will post an update tomorrow and each day until resolution.

December 26:

Still continuing on natural therapy every 5 hours.  Feeling better. No muscle aches, no head ache. Just a little chest congestion and infrequent cough.  It appears to be subsiding slowly.  I believe the three main products that are helping the most in terms of infection are the:  propolis extract, oregano & olive leaf extracts, umckaloabo extract & Vitamin C.  Symptoms are waning so I may not need an antibiotic. Tomorrow is the last day before I make that decision.

Tom - Just out of curiousity, have you ever thought about taking PureImmune Plus on a regular basis? (Not pushing that particular product, really, since I don't take it myself - I only have so much money).

Do you supplement with Vitamin D3? If so, how much?  Pete

December 27

I woke up feeling about 75 - 80% better today.  I decided there was no need to get a prescription for antibiotics. The infection is regressing quickly. I can feel my energy restoring. I believe in another day or two the cough will be gone as well.  This is definitely a therapy I will do again at the first sign of a cold

On the contrary, a co-worker had the infection but was out sick today. I guess you could say they were down for the count.  That person was taking an over-the-counter product.  I wanted to tell them that stuff is only masking their symptoms and will do nothing for killing an infection.  When you mask the symptoms you give yourself the illusion your getting better while under the surface the infection grows stronger.

Unless something changes negatively, I won't report anymore here since I'm almost completely well. Smile

Hi Pete,

I didn't know about that particular brand of Sacchromyces cerevisiae.  I was aware of Biothera's product, Wellmune WGP, Sacchromyces cerevisiae.  I was taking that a year or so ago as an immune system maintenance product. I think I posted some information about that in the old forum some time ago. It is a noteworthy product for boosting the immune system.  I was thinking about adding Wellmune WGP to my regime but I didn't want to wait for it to arrive mail order.  I opted for the Wellness Herbal Resistance Liquid extract for immune system support since it was available locally.  The Brazilian green propolis extract and oregano oil & olive leaf extract specifically kill bacteria and viruses.  An immune system supporting product, like the one you suggested, or the Wellmune WGP, is good to take during the cold/flu season as a preventative but once you get an infection you should always add something natural that will kill the infection.

The product I listed about called
Nutra Joint - Joint and & Immune System Support has 2,000 mg of Vitamin D3. I've been taking that once a day at night.

Thanks for the info though.

-Tom

Tom, thank you for sharing this experience and what you used (will keep in my records)

It is the "season" for cold and flu and while I proudly keep saying I-am-never-sick I have been catch as a liar for Christmas !

It started (I assume) as an acute bronchitis, with sore throat and then there in the lungs and not as more typical, in the nose and sinuses which were catch a bit (1-2 days) after.

I could easily cough up sputum (sorry, not a nice story..) and only used 1000 mg vitamin C, 6 garlic extract pills, 1300 mg l-lysine, 1 probiotics pill plus more zinc. I also used regular mallow leaves infusion with honey as this is particularly recommended for bronchitis. I avoided dairy (mucus-forming), sugar etc.. and had (acknowledgment here to a wonderful wife and nurse!) my chicken soups and fair amount of vegetable and proteins per day.

I do not have a diary as precise as your but the crisis were max on 12-23, 24 and 25, then going better on 26 and 27 with today 28 no fever at all and quickly recovering. However, I could surely have done it better .....

I had panic moment when I saw fever up to 39C (102.2 F) and considering calling doc for antibiotics but in a moment of lucidity I realized that (i) it was all maybe viral (hence not really for antibiotics) and (ii) I was forgetting the most basic grandmother recommendation: force you to stay in bed when fever (not surfing on the web or worst working!) as I was not helping the heat energy generators in my body to fight the disease. I then did the trick: I doubled the pyjamas, doubled the covers, added a snow bonnet and stayed in bed (*) An hour and half later I was completely wet with sweat but fever was down of 1.5C (34F) (how exquisite is our body temperature regulation system!) and felt immediately better; no more panic!

I could have shortened the crisis maybe by 1-2 days by simply resting in bed in the early stage. That was my lesson (re) learnt !

Happy New Year 2011 !  Smile

(*) the unauthorized picture my wife took reminded me the "... unrecognizable to myself..." in Bruce Springfield's song Philadelphia!

albedo,
Thanks for the info.  Yes resting is important.  Actually nothing feels better than staying in bed and resting when you're sick. I should have done that too. I was feeling so much better on the 26th that I went to the gym and worked out for 45 min. I know exercise strengthens the immune system but after I was done I worried that I might have over done it.  Funny though I felt much better after the workout.  Although I don't recommend exerting oneself when sick.  What you did is the best - stay in bed and rest. Let your body use it's energy to fight the infection.  Hey albedo, you should buy a bottle of Brazilian green just to have it on hand. The shelf life for alcohol extracts are 2-3 years.

Tom, thank you. Do you know if LEF offers an equivalent? When visiting them recently at Ft Lauderdale I was told that even if I do not see something on-line I can always call them and place an order by phone. Just wonder if you know this for Brazilian Green Propolis, I will try to call them anyway.

Thanks for all of these great anecdotes.

I also wanted to add to the mix the latest blog post from Dr Smith about Herbal Remedies and the Flu.

Personally, my wife had a cold/flu the weekend before Christmas, and we followed the Healing With Whole Foods book recommendations in addition to extra zinc lozenges, immune protect, and a strict diet. She was down Friday with a high fever in the afternoon  and through the night, and by Monday she was healed.

We take several dietary and lifestyle recommendation from the Paul Pitchford's extraordinary encyclopedia. If you are interested, you can check it out at amazon. Some of the recommendations we followed for the cold was immediate ceasing of animal protein, no sugar or salt, and reduce food intake. Drink plenty of tea to warm and hydrate the body, and rest.
