Why did LEF stop selling Life Extension Vital Greens Mix?

The product was discontinued due to low sales volume.

Too bad there is no way to find out why sales were low.  I'm curious that maybe people don't believe greens are important, or they believe a powdered green supplement would not provide the same nutrition as the real thing. Was it a marketing problem perhaps? A pricing problem? Studies are appearing that show the freeze dried variety has noteworthy values of nutrients. LEF might want to consider reintroducing a product like that but first find a unique selling proposition. The "greens" category is very crowded. Although a good product, I don't think there was anything that really stood out in my mind.

Maybe if you use this forum and take a poll and also print a poll in the magazine and solicit your customers and ask them what they want in a greens supplement. Design it around their needs. It may do better.

I think there are two reasons why greens of all kinds (wheatgrass, chlorella, etc.) aren't more popular.  Lack of education about their effectiveness is one.  The other is they taste really bad.  If you choose pills or capsules instead, you have to take so many to get a really effective dose.

From 29 years of experience at Life Extension, can tell you most people are like infants when it comes to taste.  We used to carry Life Extension Herbal Mix which, in my opinion tasted good in any kind of juice and was even drinkable in water, but most people don't want to drink a slightly thick, green drink that didn't taste like soda.

Another problem with some of these "All-In-One" drinks is what I call the "kitchen sink" approach.  Companies will tout 50 ingredients in a product but when you check dosages for each in a serving, it's too low to be effective.

Was this "taste" issue taken into consideration when vital greens was developed?

Here is what Id like to see in a LEF meal replacement formula.  Now, I'm going to list products that can be used as a guideline for the formula. Actually I've been buying all of these products and mixing them to make my own formula.  I think it would be less expensive if LEF made a formula.

Greens & Fruits
  • All organic
  • Freeze dried or some other low-temperature drying process
  • The total of the mix must be at least 9-12 grams to be effective.
  • No fillers like apple pectin or maltodextrin. NO artificial or 'natural' flavors.
  • Product I like... > Product Idea <
Medicinal Mushrooms
  • Product I like is Mushroom Matrix Powder > Link <
Protein / Amino Acids / immunoglobulinsOmega 3's MineralsSweeteners
  • Lo-han
  • Stevia
  • Honey Powder
Provide a thick, creamy quality
  • Oat Milk Powder - As SEEN HERE
  • Oat milk can also provide fiber and beta glucans.
  • Oat milk is naturally sweet!

Okay now the taste.  No artificial flavors. Not even any of the so-called natural flavors.  No fillers, The only flavor I can think of that would be really 'natural' is 100% coca powder and 100% vanilla bean.  It's hard to get that rich strawberry taste from freeze dried strawberries alone. So I vote for a rich, creamy chocolate flavor.

Now, when you put all those quality ingredients together with their unique selling points. NOW you have something that stands out and you can sell.

Any hope that a meal replacement of similar quality would be made by LEF?

I use products from the Amazing Grass company daily. I've tried lots of them, these stand out. Great company, great products, even great tasting.  You can order their stuff direct cheaper than store prices especially if you sign up for regular shipments.
