Hello,
I am new to the forum and very glad to have found it.
I would like to get folks' opinions on a Top 10 list for individual supplements specifically for Life Extension/Anti-Aging purposes. I know this is updating all the time so any current information would be much welcomed.

Thank you!

Welcome to the Forums, J Reinhal.

Are you referring to this list: http://www.lef.org/search/products.aspx?k=2012TopTen ?

Thank you for your response!

To clarify, I should say top 10 individual ingredients  (i.e. CoQ10, Resveratrol, etc).

I'm still working on my list but for me #1 most important appears to be manganese. Considering what resveratrol does along with Vit D they would probably tie for #2, as they both appear to increase MnSOD which helps with mitochondria function. Increasing MnSOD without enough Mn appears to just run you out of Mn. From past personal experience I would also advise blood testing if you intend to take high doses of any of those three since bad manganese status (high or low) can cause major health problems. I think I would put Choline at #4 as very few people get enough of that and there are few food sources. It was originally thought to be conditionally essential, as the body can produce it, until the frequency of genetic defects involved with production was discovered and now the AI is thought to be about half of what it should be (~ 900mg/day) according to a study from a few years ago.

I personally take all essential/conditionally essential nutrients (vitamins/minerals/fatty acids), and get extra aminos via protein shakes. I get frequent blood tests and tweak levels as I go.

IMO I do not know of ANY sups that have been proven to extend life. On the other hand there are many good sups that promote health and well being and decrease ones chance of disease or complications of illnesses. I am a firm believer in the DRUG naltrexone though.  In low dosages, naltrexone causes of myriad of beneficial effects on the body. From alleviating pain, increased energy, promotion of well being and affecting the immune system in so many powerful ways. It is so safe I consider it a sup. and can be obtained without an Rx in several countries. Can LDN extend life, I do not know but it sure will improve the quality of life in those that take it and in that respect it is a anti-aging drug.

My top 10 focuses on supplements I think most people would benefit from. In priority order:

1. Probiotics: Rotate types. There are thousands of types in the body.
2. Vitamin D: Blood test highly recommended.
3. B complex: Some people have issues with B vitamin conversion and may need optimal forms such as P5P instead of regular B6, or B12 sublingual methylcobalamin.
4. Ubiquinol: great for energy with Shilajit.
5. Fish oil
6. Tryptophan: It's depleted from our food supply. Take late afternoon or early evening for better sleep.
7. Vit C
8. Methylation support: SAM-e, L-methionine or TMG.
9. Antioxidants
10. Vit E: Mixed or delta tocopherols.

Also worth considering:
carnosine
phosphatidylserine
vitamin K1/K2
magnesium
selenium
zinc
iodine
curcumin

Great question!

To Zork:

IMO tryptophan would not be a life extender, although it may enhance sleep and mental well being.
