Life Extension's melatonin is released over six hours.  It doesn't make me groggy but everyone is different.

Marinol contains a synthetic form of THC, the active compound in Cannabis sativa, and as a prescription drug would circumvent the social or legal problems associated with medical marijuana.

Another thing that helped my mom a lot was supplementing her solid food with Life Extension whey protein shakes.

You might also want to look into fish oil, especially the DHA component, which has a powerful and well documented anticancer effect.  Mom took enteric coated fish oil softgels containing 500 mg DHA and 250 mg EPA.

The following medical article has CT scans over a period of several years which show major regression of lung malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a high-grade sarcoma with very poor prognosis.  The patient reduced his dietary omega 6 consumption and took large doses of omega 3 fatty acids (15 g/day): DHA (8,160 mg/day) and EPA (6,840 mg/day).

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=16201843

"Because diets rich in omega-6 fatty acids, especially LA, have been reported to promote tumorigenesis (18–20) and diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids suppress tumorigenesis (13–26), the ratio of these essential fatty acids in the diet may be an important factor in the development and progression of various cancers."

To your point ... I've been supplementing her diet with a meal replacement shake that I put together with added protein and other nutritional ingredients.  It's about 1000 calories total. She drinks it in divided servings 3 times a day, in addition to regular meals. She has no appetite for even a few sips.

I've done extensive research on the effects of dietary oils. A double-edged sword indeed. Lipid peroxidation of dietary lipids, most notably DHA which is highly unstable, isn't solely a 'negative' destructive process per se. It control many aspects of a cell including apoptosis.  This can help eliminate damaged cells such as cancer.  Thanks for reminding me of that.

The DHA might also help her cognitive function as she is experiencing brain fog and grogginess. At first I thought it was post operative delirium since anesthesia is hard on some people especially seniors. It's been a couple months since surgery so I'm thinking it caused by something else.

To the points made above ....

Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgy, a Hungarian Nobel Prize winner in medicine in the 1930's, and Dr. William Koch, also a Nobel Prize winner of the same period, discovered the dicarbonyl compound methylglyoxal (MGO) is effective against cancer. Two specifically Glyoxal & Methylglyoxal he named Retine. His homeopathic preparations are expensive.

You can read the interesting story and history > HERE

Manuka Honey is sold certified tested two ways.. UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) certification which measures the overall bacteria killing power of the Manuka honey.  MGO (MethylGyOxal) certification which measures the amount of actual 'methylglyoxal' in the honey — This is what gives medicinal Manuka honey it's properties.  I tend to prefer MGO testing over UMF.  Don't buy it unless it is certified by either method. MGO Manuka Honey is much cheaper than Retine preparations.

Adding MGO to the diet can be a therapeutic for diseases like infections and cancer. As a side note, this may be part of the reason why fish oils have immune boosting properties, as they (especially DHA) easily and readily oxidize producing such dicarbonyl compounds.

Personally, I would not suggest one intentionally consume methylglyoxal at high concentrations or anything at high concentrations that produces it unless there is an infection or disease like cancer.  Even though we know such dicarbonyl compounds are genotoxic, the long-term negative effect of dietary methylglyoxal at high concentrations has not been fully elucidated.

I will probably add Manuka Honey MGO 550 (550mg methylglyoxal) to my moms cancer regimen.

A few thoughts.  My mom also had periods of little appetite where taking a lot of pills was impossible.  One thing I found useful was Maitake D-Fraction.  It's a highly purified liquid mushroom extract - it only takes a few drops to get a significant immune boost.

A common cause of temporary cognitive problems (sometimes very severe) in elderly people is urinary tract infections.  It was quite startling but a nurse told me it was rather common.  Antibiotics clear it up and cognitive function returns to normal.  Often these urinary tract infections tend to reoccur and prevention is better than multiple rounds of antibiotics.  I found the AHCC combined with Cran-Max and a powerful probiotic, morning and night, to be quite effective.

Also, anyone looking into DHA (fish oil) and cancer should be aware that high dose vitamin E may render it ineffective.  (BTW, the DCA (Sodium Dichloroacetate) that they discuss on this site is worth checking out.....)

I love manuka honey.  It's also the bomb for pressure sores.

DDye,

Marinol not covered by Blue Shield prescription plan. $300 per month direct pay. Ouch. Shame.

Drumlib,

Interesting you mention urinary tract infections.  In my studies I discovered Nitroxoline, a relatively safe and effective drug used to treat urinary tract infections Inhibits tumor metastasis and angiogenesis.

I wrote about it which you can read > HERE

I would like to bring this information to LEF attention and ask that they include this drug in their report on cancer adjunct therapies.

Dear Tom,

Sending good wishes your mom's way. Please also consider Resveratrol. Please see the below paper titled "

Molecular mechanisms of resveratrol action in lung cancer cells using dual protein and microarray analyses."

Further to DDye's suggestion on Medical Marijuana i would very strongly second it, I have seen great improvement in appetite, well being and sleep improvement. As for anxiety the selection of the right indica dominant strain is important. A wrong strain can increase anxiety levels in some people. I know mom is not willing to consider it yet but thought i would express my support for the idea anyways.

Note to self ,,,

> Evidence for Human Lung Stem Cells

For the first time, human lung stem cells were used to repair damaged lung.  "... After injection of human lung stem cells into damaged mouse lung in vivo, human lung stem cells form human bronchioles, alveoli, and pulmonary vessels integrated structurally and functionally with the damaged organ ... Human lungs contain identifiable stem cells. In animal models, these cells participate in tissue homeostasis and regeneration. They have the undemonstrated potential to promote tissue restoration in patients with lung disease."[1]
