Yes, I am looking into a medicinal mushrooms.  I think I've narrowed it down to the 'Turkey Tail' mushroom, as this seems to have all the theraputic consituents for treating cancer, especially lung cancer.

PubMed Link:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12814145

Where to purchase:

A 500 gram powder with various, medicinal mushrooms:

Apparently medicinal mushrooms have an indigestible cell wall called 'chitin' that needs to be broken down before the substances can be released. Hot water extraction (mushroom tea) is the way to disolve the cell wall.

I would probably by the 500 gram powder and put it into empty tea bags and make a tea.

I know that Beta-Glucan is getting a lot of attention right now.  I took it for a few months (250 mg, the Paradise brand) but didn't feel any better or any worse, but then again I don't have any illness.

Sorry to hear about your mom.  Bless you for being her angel! First support the liver. This is classic Hulda Clark. Coffee enemas. Check for parasites and if necessary do a parrasite cleanse.  Then support the lung tissue. Use the protomorphogen for lung called Neumotrophin PMG. this is Royal Lee. this prevents the spread of ca in the lung. Curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, and resveratrol mixed with coconut oil have been shown to be very effective in limiting the spread of cancer.  See Russell Blaylock Hope this helps!

Hi Everyone...

My mom has lost her hunger. It is getting very difficult to keep up her calories. Does anyone know of supplement / natural product that can induce hunger or appetite?

She's also having a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. Part anxiety and restless thoughts (i.e. nerves, fear).  I've tried 3 mg of liquid melatonin. This induced sleepiness but didn't sustain sleep throughout the night. The Oncologist prescribed a low dose anti anxiety med that acts like a sleep aid but that didn't maintain quality sleep either.  What I need is a strong sleep aid(s) that will induce and maintain quality sleep without causing next-day grogginess. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help

-Tom.

If she can get medical marijuana, it helps improve appetite and can also help with sleep.  Otherwise there is a drug called marinol that will help improve appetite.  Melatonin has a half life of about two hours so the timed release version may help, or just take a little more upon awakening during the night.  Sublingually administered melatonin works well, and lower doses often work better than higher ones.  For anxiety and/or sleep a low dose of GABA helps.  Exercise is great for alleviating anxiety.  Low blood sugar can contribute to anxiety, so eating is important.  Some people find medical marijuana is also helpful for anxiety but it has been my observation that it can worsen anxiety in some people.

AHCC very noticeably increased my moms appetite when she was battling cancer.  She took 1.5 gm first thing in the morning and another 1.5 gm before bed.  Always on an empty stomach.  AHCC was the only immune booster that had an obvious effect.  BTW, although these immune boosters are quite safe, they can aggravate rheumatoid arthritis because they affect the Th1/Th2 balance.

This article from the Townsend Letter is quite interesting:

Belanger, James "An in-office evaluation of four dietary supplements on natural killer cell activity" Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, 2005 Feb/Mar
"The natural killer (NK) cell activity blood test is useful in predicting the prognosis of a cancer patient. The purpose of this in-office, nonrandomized open-label trial was to determine whether four different dietary supplements commonly sold in health food stores and over the Internet, consistently and statistically affected NK cell activity in cancer patients. Thirty-four patients were assigned to one of four groups: Group A was given 1-3g/day of modified arabinoxylane with meals. Group B was given 6000mg/day of coriolus mushroom. Group C was given 4g/day of antigen-infused dialyzable bovine colostrum/whey extract and group D was given 3-6g/day of active hexose correlated compound (AHCC). NK cell activities were assessed before treatment and after an average of 16 weeks of therapy. AHCC WAS THE ONLY SUPPLEMENT THAT CONSISTENTLY AND STATISTICALLY INCREASED NK CELL ACTIVITY. The average increase was 249%. Modified arabinoxylane statistically increased NK cell activity, but did not consistently help every patient. No side effects were encountered during the study period in any of the four groups." [emphasis mine]

An nutritional Oncologist suggested two LEF products: Coriolus versicilor supper strength  and Astragalas caps.

Why don't you add these two supplements to your cancer program?

To DumLib & Rainbow,

Thanks. Yes, medicinal mushrooms will be part of her therapy.  Humm ... Yeah, AHCC makes sense since appetite and immune system are linked.  With that being said I wonder if low appetite is a sign of weak or taxed immune system. I could probably judge by appitite if immunotherapy is working.  Interesting.

To DDye,

Oncologist prescribed very low dose Lorazepam which is a GABA enhancing medication. It seems to work almost instantly. Sleep quality seems to be improving a bit since starting that a few days ago. I mentioned medical marijuana. No go. I think it's the stigma surrounding it that turns her off. I may try time-release melatonin. How long does LEF brand release after ingested? I wouldn't want grogginess net next day.
