I've heard of the many benefits of consuming soy for women to help minimize and reduce the effects of menopause by increasing estrogen.

In the case of men, can anyone tell me if consuming soy (tofu, soy protein mix) will increase the estrogen level and cause problems for hormonal balance?  Will this cause a man to have too much estrogen and a lower level of testosterone?  thanks.

Regarding testosterone, one animal study showed that "that genistein inhibits testosterone secretion by fetal Leydig cells during early fetal development."  Another study of Japanese children associates soy with an increase in testosterone in girls but not boys.  However, a review found no effect of soy on testosterone in men:  "The intervention data indicate that isoflavones do not exert feminizing effects on men at intake levels equal to and even considerably higher than are typical for Asian males."
