Hi: I'm desperate for help! No matter what I do I can't lose weight. Even when I'm at my most disciplined with diet & exercise, I'm only able to hold off the weight gain--not lose it. 

I'm looking to start a program to kick off a 40-lb weight loss and was looking for feedback on the initial combination I've picked...

Do they work well together? Is there anything I should add? Leave out? What can I start off with for the first month that will let me see real results so as to keep me motivated? What's the minimal amount of supplements I can take (I don't want to be swallowing at obscene amount of pills!)

Here's what I have:
  • 7-Keto® DHEA Metabolite
  • CoffeeGenic® Weight Management™ with Green Coffee Extract, 90 vegetarian capsules
  • Complete B-Complex, 60 vegetarian capsules (Can I leave this out and just get a vitamin B12 shot?)
  • Magnesium Caps, 500 mg 100 vegetarian capsules (How important is magnesium?)
  • Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA with Sesame Lignans & Olive Fruit Extract, 120 softgels (Do I really need this?)


Thinking about adding:
  • A good probiotic
  • Sea-Iodine™
Personal Background:
  • 32-year-old professional female with a stressful, sedentary day job. 
  • 5'4", ~180lbs. 
  • Reason for weight gain: sports injury that left me unable to exercise for months + hormonal fluctuations from IUD, now removed. While on the IUD I developed an ovarian cyst and elevated counts for ovarian cancer. Symptoms have all disappeared since it was removed.
  • Suspected adrenal fatigue from 12 years on Rx stimulant medication (adderall, vyvanse)
  • Suspected elevated estrogen level from IUD, history of crippling/debilitating periods
  • Trouble with short-term memory and focus
  • Poor sleep habits
  • Gas
  • Diet: I eat pretty clean, mostly vegan, gluten-free, but I eat meat/dairy when my body craves it. I'm allergic to shellfish and peanuts. I have a sweet tooth.
  • Exercise: Lately I've been swimming, but for the first few months this year I was exercising 5x/week cardio + weight intervals for 90minutes

You should have your thyroid function tested if you haven't already. Many of the symptoms that you describe can be indications hypothyroidism.

Have you looked at the information at http://www.lef.org/protocols/metabolic_health/obesity_01.htm ?

In answer to your questions, a B12 injection would not substitute for the entire B complex, but is good to add if your physician is willing. Magnesium is very important. And most people do need some extra omega-3 fatty acids unless you are eating a lot of oily fish.

Regarding your supplement program, although some of the components may help with fat loss, it is not a program that would be recommended for general health since there are some nutrients missing. Unless your diet supplies enough of these, you need vitamins A, C, D, E and K, calcium, zinc, selenium and other nutrients, such as are contained in a multinutrient supplement. Regarding weight gain, are you counting calories?  Sometimes people consume more than they think they do.

You also mentioned using weights, which can cause weight gain because muscle weighs more than fat, so it's good to look at body fat rather than numbers on a scale.

HI Claire

sincerely sorry to hear, you sound very stressed over your situation.

i'd add something that I really believe in, yoga. I've practiced for 17yrs, and my mental,

emotional, And physical health has reaped benefits. My feeling is you need to de-stress, probably

carrying some of the baggage from the cancer ordeal.

The body listens, treat it well. Which is why so called, positive thinking/feelings toward yourself, work.

I'd also recommend Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert PhD of the NIMH.




I see you done lots of research on the physical, don't forget your other parts!




I know you'll get good advice here, and probably awesome results

"5x/week cardio + weight intervals for 90minutes" would not allow weight loss.  That's because you tend to eat more.  I've had this problem for 30 years.   I run for an hour, know I've burned a few hundred calories then eat a few hundred calories.  HIIT is severe exercise.  I use a treadmill but swimming or stat bike or elliptical could work as well.  The trick is getting the heart rate to its maximum for 30 seconds, followed by 90 seconds active rest, done 6 to 8 times.  Mercola has written about it, saying it stimulates growth hormone release.   Studies at Laval U shows that the 20 minutes of HIIT causes 10X more fat loss than 45 minutes on a bike.  In a similar vein, intense weight lifting does the same to hormones.   I use the Slow Burn protocol by Fred Hahn.   For pushups, take ten seconds to lower oneself to the floor, then 10 seconds to raise oneself, done til you can't do anymore.  Then go on to squats, etc, always using the 10 second pattern.
